Hiking

Thames Path National Trail

Thames Path National Trail You may remember the programme by Tony Robinson called the Great River where he followed the Thames from its source in The Cotswolds through to our Capital. Start: source of the Thames, Cotswolds End: Woolwich, London Length: 185 miles (298 km) There is a dispute as to where the actual source of the Thames actually is. Thames Head is a group of seasonal springs that appear near the village of Coates. One or more of these springs are traditionally identified as the source of the Thames. What is easier to find is the start of the path for the national trail which is just the road from Cotswold Mill and a hundred yards or so down the road towards Kemble. The Thames Path is a long distance walking trail, following England’s best known river for 185.2miles (298 km) as it meanders from its source in the Cotswolds through several rural counties and on into the heart of London. On its way the Trail passes peaceful water meadows rich in wildlife, historic towns and cities and many lovely villages, finishing in Woolwich just a few miles from the sea. The best months to visit are spring through to the end of autumn. If you’re interested in wildlife there are always a range of birds present on and around the river but they’re at their most active and visible during April and May whilst establishing territories and finding mates. If you’re keen on wildflowers, then April to September is the time to visit, and if insects such as butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies are the things you’d most like to see choose June to September.
Fishing

Fishing

The Cotswolds, known for their picturesque villages, rolling hills, and idyllic countryside, offer a range of fishing opportunities for enthusiasts. Here’s some information about fishing in the Cotswolds: Lakes and Reservoirs: The region is dotted with numerous lakes and reservoirs, providing excellent fishing opportunities. Some popular locations include the Cotswold Water Park, a large complex of lakes and water bodies offering coarse fishing, and the Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford, which is known for its trout fishing. Rivers: The Cotswolds are crisscrossed by several rivers, such as the River Windrush, River Coln, and River Thames, where anglers can enjoy freshwater fishing. These rivers are home to a variety of fish species, including trout, grayling, chub, roach, and dace. Fishing Clubs and Fisheries: There are several fishing clubs and fisheries in the Cotswolds that provide access to well-managed fishing waters. These venues often offer day-ticket fishing or membership options. Some popular ones include the Lechlade and Bushyleaze Trout Fisheries, where you can enjoy trout fishing, and the Bourton Lakes, which offer mixed coarse fishing. Coarse Fishing: Coarse fishing is particularly popular in the Cotswolds, with many lakes and rivers providing opportunities to catch species like carp, perch, tench, bream, and pike. The region offers a mix of still waters, canals, and rivers that cater to coarse anglers of varying skill levels. Fly Fishing: Fly fishing enthusiasts can find opportunities to pursue their passion in the Cotswolds as well. Various fisheries and sections of rivers offer fly fishing for trout and grayling. You may need a permit or day ticket to access certain stretches of water. Scenic Surroundings: One of the unique aspects of fishing in the Cotswolds is the stunning scenery. The region’s charming villages, rolling hills, and peaceful countryside create a beautiful backdrop for a day spent fishing.
