Cotswold Private Tours

Tour the Cotswolds with a Private Guide. We have partnered with CJP Tours who offer a range of bespoke tours.  Their private driver will give you the freedom to discover the beauty and charm of the Cotswolds whilst enjoying the views from the comfort of a 4 or 7 seater vehicle.  Leave the planning and driving to them. Their dedicated guide will share facts and other information about places as you pass through them, giving you an insight into historic and daily life in the region. Having lived in the area for over 45 years, the owners have become very familiar with those ‘off-the-beaten-track’ and easily missed locations. Their tour guides live in the Cotswolds and are knowledgeable about the region and familiar with the best locations to shop, eat, drink and stay. They know the Cotswolds intimately and will work with you to ensure you get what you want from your tour. The Cotswolds is a region steeped in history and natural beauty, and there are countless intriguing tidbits about it. Here are five lesser-known facts: 1. **Ancient Tracks:** The Cotswolds has paths that have been in use for over 5,000 years. The “Ridgeway”, which runs along the Chiltern Hills to Avebury in Wiltshire, is considered one of the oldest ‘roads’ in Britain, and was once used by prehistoric traders. 2. **The “Wool Church”:** Many of the grand churches in the Cotswold villages, known as “wool churches,” owe their existence to the lucrative medieval wool trade. The wealth amassed by local wool merchants led them to fund the construction of these stunning, elaborate churches as a testament to their prosperity and piety. 3. **Cotswold Lions:** The Cotswolds once had its own breed of sheep known as the Cotswold Lion. These sheep had long, golden fleeces and were a significant reason behind the region’s success in the medieval wool trade. The name “lion” derived from their large, shaggy manes. 4. **Hidden Tunnels:** Beneath the streets of Cirencester, one of the Cotswolds’ most prominent towns, there’s a network of secret tunnels. They date back centuries and were believed to be used for a variety of reasons, from smuggling goods to serving as secret escape routes. 5. **Olympick Games:** Long before the modern Olympic Games, the Cotswolds had its own version known as the “Cotswold Olimpick Games.” Started in the 17th century in Chipping Campden, these games included eccentric events like shin-kicking and tug-of-war. While the original event faded over time, local enthusiasts revived the tradition in the 20th century, and it’s still celebrated today. The Cotswolds is not just about scenic beauty; it’s a land where every stone, path, and village has a rich story to tell!

Bourton-on-the-Water

Delve into the enchanting heart of the Cotswolds, where history, nature, and charm intertwine, in the beautiful village of Bourton-on-the-Water. As a native and lifelong resident, I can offer a unique perspective and share insider stories passed down through generations of my family. Here’s a taste of what awaits you: * **Tranquil Beauty:** Known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’, Bourton-on-the-Water is a scene straight out of a storybook. Its honey-coloured stone houses and bridges straddle the gentle River Windrush under a canopy of graceful willow trees. This village isn’t just a place; it’s an atmosphere, one of serenity and timelessness. * **Historic Charm:** Experience life as it was in the Roman era. Let me lead you along ancient streets once trodden by Roman soldiers. You’ll see the indelible mark of centuries in the timeworn Cotswold stone of the buildings, each with its own tale. * **Living History:** The local pubs and shops, traditional in every way, add to the charm. Enjoy a pint in a centuries-old inn, where I’ll regale you with tales of the characters who’ve drunk there over hundreds of years. Or find a perfect memento in our quaint shops that offer local crafts and world-renowned Cotswold honey. * **Natural Splendour:** Immerse yourself in the breathtaking English countryside, with its rolling hills, lush meadows, and diverse wildlife. Our guided walk will include the tranquil banks of the Windrush, where I’ll share the lesser-known tales of its aquatic inhabitants. * **Village Treasures:** We’ll explore the remarkable Model Village, a perfect miniature replica of our town. I’ll tell you about the extraordinary efforts taken by local craftsmen in its creation. Don’t miss the fascinating Cotswold Motoring Museum, packed with vintage vehicles and memorabilia, which still inspires the child in all of us! Don’t just see Bourton-on-the-Water; experience it with all your senses. Hear the babbling river and the peal of the church bells. Smell the fresh country air and blooming gardens. Feel the centuries-old stones beneath your hands. Taste the local delicacies. And, most importantly, hear the stories that make this village come alive.

House Rules

We try to flexible and not to put too many constraints on our guests but we are also committed to looking after our homes.

We welcome up to 2 pets in Egret Lodge but talk to us about your plans. Always let us know if you plan to bring pets (there is a small charge per pet) as we need to factor it into our cleans. We do not allow pets into the bedrooms and particularly onto beds. We recognise that keeping pets off the furniture is a challenge so you will find throws available to use please

No parties, hen nights or stag nights – this really isn’t the place for loud parties as many of the homes on this lake are occupied by year round residents. Unfortunately due to a number of past experiences we do not allow all male occupancy of our homes. Sorry guys!

And that’s really it – tell us about breakages so that we can replace where necessary. Larger damage and specialist cleaning we will need to discuss with you if necessary.

We just ask that you treat our home with respect and that you consider our neighbours when you are on the decking in particular as sound does travel a lot further over water.

A beautiful house in a peaceful location. Stayed here for our ‘mini moon’ after our wedding, and it definitely hit the brief! The right amount of luxury that still feels homely.
Everything was just perfect, had the best time.
My favourite part of the house- the hot tub on the decking overlooking the lake 👌🏻

Had a really nice time at this place. The house has quite unique architecture, with huge windows and an incredible view. The well-designed interior and lakeside area are stunning, and the height of the ceiling — uh, wish we had this at home! It feels very special and sets the right mood for relaxation. We had a lot of fun observing the local wildlife and using the hot tub.
