Full Description

Stonemason’s Cottage, a structure listed as Grade II, has its origins in the late eighteenth century. Its name is derived from a prior owner who constructed the stone mullion window visible in the study area and also the ones next door at number 8.  Sadly he passed away after completing the one in the study area, hence the others are still timber frames. This individual is also credited with the discovery of the South Cerney Head and Foot (part of a crucifix), an artifact now on display in the British Museum.

You are staying in the heart of South Cerney village. The cottage is on a quiet main road with ample, free on street parking. The nearest pubs, fish and chip shop, Indian takeaway, deli serving breakfast are only 10 minutes walk in either direction. Cotswold Water Park is on your doorstep with all the activities and views that it has to offer. There are multiple circular walks from your doorstep and there are two small supermarkets within 10 minutes walk. Cirencester, the Roman capital of the Cotswolds, is only 4 miles away (10 minutes in the car).

A car is ideal for exploring the Cotswold villages, but not essential. The cottage is on the no.51 bus route that passes between Cheltenham and Swindon. Kemble Station is the nearest railway station (about 15 minutes away), directly out of London Paddington or Gloucester/Cheltenham. There are many flat cycle routes around the village and the water park which can easily be enjoyed and cycle hire is available nearby

Our favourite things to do

Take a trip into town....

Cirencester

Welcome to Cirencester, often referred to as the “Capital of the Cotswolds”. This charming market town is steeped in history, with roots reaching back to Roman times, earning it the title of the second largest town in Britain during that era. As you wander through Cirencester, you’re walking on layers of history. One of the highlights is the Corinium Museum, home to an impressive collection of Roman artefacts. Here, you can immerse yourself in the region’s past, exploring exhibits that tell tales of Roman life, the town’s agricultural roots, and its growth through the centuries. Stroll through the town centre and marvel at the grandeur of the Church of St. John the Baptist, standing tall since the 15th century. With its imposing tower, intricately carved stonework and beautiful stained glass, it’s a marvel of medieval architecture. In the heart of the town, you’ll find the Market Place. On Mondays and Fridays, the square is bustling with local vendors selling a variety of goods, from fresh produce to local crafts. It’s a vibrant scene that encapsulates the spirit of Cirencester. Lastly, don’t miss the Abbey Grounds, a beautifully landscaped park adjacent to the site of a former Augustinian abbey. It’s a perfect spot to unwind, with the pretty River Churn flowing through. Cirencester offers a delightful blend of history, charm, and Cotswold character – truly a place where the past and present meet. Experience it and let Cirencester charm you as it has so many before.

Grab a coffee

Carle’s Coffee Shop

Carle’s coffee shop is on the corner of the Spine Road and Cerney Wick Lane and often frequented by us as we zip between lakes. I can highly recommend the flat white and the flapjacks although you’ll find much more there to try including a quiet corner where you can enjoy a cake or sandwich. Carle also provides bike hire and is the centre of some serious riding that goes on around the area. You’ll also find them up by the Relish cafe where they hire bikes. Carle will deliver the bikes to the door at a reasonable price – if you want to find out more then please speak to us
