Spectacular Sunset views in the Cotswolds: Nature’s Grand Finale

There are many things that make living in the Cotswolds special, but if you ask me, the autumn sunsets top the list. It’s as if nature decides to pull out all the stops, painting the sky with a blend of oranges, pinks, and purples that could give the local art scene a run for its money.

Now, you might wonder why our autumn sunsets are so striking. To appreciate this, you need to consider a few factors, starting with our geographical location. The Cotswolds are blessed with expansive, undulating landscapes, offering an unobstructed view of the horizon. There’s nothing quite like watching the sun dip behind the rolling hills, casting a warm, golden glow over the countryside.

The next contributing element is the autumnal atmosphere itself. During this time of year, the air tends to be clearer. The particles and pollution that often diffuse daylight have mostly settled, leaving a crisp, clean canvas for the setting sun to work its magic.

But that’s not all. Let’s not forget about the angle of the sun. As autumn rolls around, the sun takes a lower path across the sky. This lower angle causes the sunlight to pass through more of the Earth’s atmosphere, scattering the shorter blue and green wavelengths and allowing the longer reds, oranges, and pinks to take center stage. The result? A sky ablaze with hues so vibrant they look like they’ve been plucked straight from an artist’s palette.

Jo and I have made it a sort of tradition to enjoy these sunsets, often from our house overlooking the lake in the Cotswold Water Park. On clear evenings, the reflection of the sky on the water’s surface adds another layer of awe to the spectacle.

In a nutshell, autumn sunsets in the Cotswolds aren’t just a treat for the eyes; they’re a testament to the incredible interplay of geography, atmosphere, and celestial mechanics. As I look forward to my evenings, watching the sky set itself on fire, I’m reminded of why I chose to make this place my home. We aren’t the only ones to appreciate the spectacular views
